History
The word aspirin owes its origin to meadowsweet's former genus name Spiraea, having been coined from 'a' (for acetyl) and 'spirin' (from Spiraea).
What are Meadowsweet's benefits?*
The Commission E approved the internal use of meadowsweet as supportive therapy for colds.
The British Herbal Compendium indicates its use for atonic and acid dyspepsia, gastritis, peptic ulceration, and rheumatic and arthritic pains (Bradley, 1992). In France, traditional indications for use are allowed, including for fever and influenza (Bradley, 1992; DPM, 1990). The German Standard License for meadowsweet tea indicates its use for feverish common colds for which a sweat treatment is desired and also to increase the amount of urine (Bradley, 1992; Braun et al., 1997; Wichtl and Bisset, 1994).*
HealthLine reports, "In traditional medicine, it’s been used to treat heartburn, stomach ulcers, colds, joint pain, arthritis, and gout. It’s also been administered as a diuretic to increase urine output in people with kidney or bladder infections (Link to NIH Article)."
The most common way to consume medicinal herbs is by brewing a tea. Making your own Meadowsweet tea is fairly easy:
- Boil 8 oz. of water.
- Place 1 bag of Meadowsweet herb into a heatproof mug.
- Pour just-barely boiling water over the tea bag.
- Let steep for 10 minutes.
Who should avoid Meadowsweet?
Use caution if you are taking aspirin, since it contains salicylic acid, the active component in aspirin. Avoid altogether if you have an aspirin allergy or salicylate sensitivity.
Finally, there’s not enough research on the safety of meadowsweet in children or people who are pregnant or breastfeeding. Thus, these groups should avoid it.
