What is smudging?
There are a lot of resources about, and opinions about, the practice of smudging. Traditionally, smudging can be summarized as a ceremonial, spiritual cleansing of a person, place, mental/energy state or item.
Native Americans are known to use White Sage for their cleansing rituals. Other cultures use different herbs, generally depending on the regional availability of burning herbs.
For example, Latin spiritual workers often incorporate palo santo, rue and basil in their cleansing rituals! Be creative in your spiritual work and use aromatic herbs that work for you and make you feel centered.
A quick and easy way to smudge is to use a Smudge Spray. Sprays can be made from botanical infusions or floral extracts. Their use is seen throughout spiritual practices. Agua de Florida (Florida Water) was originally introduced as a cologne but evolved into a staple altar or prayer table. It is believed to dissipate negative energy, release bad spiritual attachments, and improves a person's spiritual footing.
Other smudge sprays are used during other energy rituals, such as Reiki sessions. My reiki master loves to use two of my products: Rose and Benzoin and Rose and Myrrh. She uses these smudge sprays during her sessions and swears by their high energy content. She stated she obtained greater assistance from God, spirit guides, and the universe. It also smells divine.
